St Joseph Primary

History:

In January 1964 the sections of the Ferntree Gully Parish called Boronia, Bayswater and The Basin were separated and formed into the Parish of Boronia. On 19th March the first classes were held at the new school at Boronia - St. Joseph’s. Gradually the area and the school grew in population so much so that new schools were formed in the areas once serviced by St. Joseph’s (1965 - new school at Bayswater, 1979 - new school at Wantirna, 1983 - new school at The Basin). This growth and expansion of the region resulted in a gradual decline in numbers in the school from a peak of 544 in 1978 to its current intimate number of 180.

Description:

The School and Church are located at 212 Boronia Road, Boronia - a property of approximately 14 acres. The grounds are a mix of native bush, asphalt playground/car park, grassed areas and a large oval. The school buildings comprise four separate blocks, connected by covered walkways. The Administration block, which fans the entrance to the school, is light and airy and highly functional comprising Staffroom, Sick Bay, Main Office, Principal’s Office, Teachers Preparation area and Toilets. Renovations to all classrooms in 1996 allow students and staff to access a modern, computerised Library and a fully-functioning Computer Centre. Four new toilet blocks, new carpet in all classrooms, new heaters in all classrooms and restructured storage areas all add up to making the school a pleasing and comfortable place to be.

Features:

One of the main features that the School Community is most proud of is the development of a fully networked computer room containing 18 P.C’s which all have C.D. Rom and Internet access capabilities. All seven classes in the School are timetabled to be learning in the Computer Room for three hours each week. This year St. Joseph’s also offers Prep to Six programs in the following areas with qualified specialists; Italian, Music, Art and Library. The availability on staff of a qualified Special Education teacher allows for support of all children with special needs. The School supports the Parish Sacramental Program and helps families to prepare their children for the Sacraments of Initiation and Eucharist. St. Joseph’s operates in a community environment with many parents supporting the school through a range of different committees, including giving of their time and energy on; Tuckshop, Uniform Shop, School Improvement, Parents and Friends, Out of Hours Care and Gardening, all functioning under the banner of the School Advisory Council.
