History

History of St Andrews Parish

St. Andrew's Parish was officially declared a Parish on the 25th of September 1982 after Fr. Brophy was appointed Parish Priest on the 21st of September 1982.

St. Andrew's is a highly multicultural Parish of over 60 nationalities and has a complex human miracle of unity, co-operation and goodwill.

Monsignor Lyons chose the name of St. Andrew's because St. Andrew was the brother of St. Peter and as our new parish was an offshoot of St. Peter's Clayton, the name was appropriate. The motto selected for St. Andrew's was "Jesum Videre" which means to see Jesus.

ST. ANDREW'S MISSION STATEMENT

"We the Parish of St. Andrew's, Clayton South, commit ourselves to being a people of faith, with a common vision. We endeavour to be a lively, loving, witnessing, worshipping people. We are on a journey bearing witness to a gospel way of life, sharing our talents, abilities and wisdom. We gather as community, celebrating the Word of God and Breaking of Bread, encouraging the wider community to take ownership of their Parish".

CONSECRATION AND REDEDICATION OF THE NEWLY RENOVATED ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH - CLAYTON SOUTH ON 27 JULY 2014

St. Andrew's in Clayton South as the parish celebrated the solemn dedecation of the newly refurbished church and altar on Sunday 27 July 2014. Archbishop Denis Hart was the principal celebrant and was joined by 15 concelebrants including our Parish Priest Fr. Shanthaiah Marneni.

In opening the Mass Archbishop Hart said: 'Indeed, this is truly a holy place. The beautiful ceremonies of dedication indicate that this is really a place set apart, where the perfect sacrifice of the Mass, the perfect worship of the sacraments, and the prayers of the faithful are united with the preaching of the Word of God to draw God's holy people to him'.

During the Mass, Archbishop Hart blessed and sprinkled the new altar, the walls and congregation with holy water. He then placed the relics of martyr St. Ignatius of Antioch and of St. Augustine inside the altar. 'Relics of the saints are placed in the altar because it is in the united tradition of love and service of God shown by the saints that we are called to follow,' he said.

The altar and walls of the Church were also anointed with Chrism oil and Incense.

At the concludion of Mass, Fr. Shanthaiah thanked the parishioners, the St. Andrew's school community, members of parish committees and all those who were involved in the refurbishment project - the planning had taken two years and the building six months to complete.

A celebration in the school hall followed the Mass.

This is a historical and a very memorable event in the history of St. Andrew's Church
