Re: Funeral Mass for the Deceased

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In our love for those who have passed, many families naturally wish to honor their loved ones with eulogies, photo displays, slideshows, personal items, and other tributes. These gestures come from the heart and beautifully express our affection and gratitude for the life we are remembering.

However, I would like to offer a gentle reminder: the funeral Mass must remain simple and centered on the Eucharist. The focus of every liturgy is Christ, not the deceased. The Church prays that the person may be purified and welcomed into eternal life. A Funeral Mass celebrates the sacrifice of Christ, who died and rose again, bringing salvation to the departed. As the Order of Christian Funerals (nos. 1–2) teaches, “The Church celebrates the funeral rites to proclaim that Christ is the victor over death.”

When too many additional elements are included, even with the best intentions, they can distract from the sacred purpose of the liturgy. Likewise, placing photographs or personal items on the sanctuary can unintentionally shift the focus away from Christ and toward the person who has died.

For this reason, I kindly ask families to discern carefully before planning eulogies, slideshows, large displays, or personal presentations during the funeral Mass.

Please note also that a eulogy should honor the deceased with sincerity and respect, while remaining concise. It is best kept within a reasonable length so that the tribute uplifts and comforts without becoming overwhelming.

Regarding viewings: The church is a sacred liturgical space, while a viewing is a more personal, social, and flexible moment of remembrance. Because the church is reserved for public worship and the celebration of the Eucharist, viewings are not generally recommended within the church itself. However, in certain circumstances, the parish can prepare a suitable room where families may have a brief viewing. Please ensure that any such request is made when booking the church for the funeral.

Regarding the Rosary: The Funeral Mass is the principal act of prayer for the deceased, and all rites should focus on Christ and the Eucharist. Devotional prayers, such as the Rosary, are warmly welcomed however families are encouraged to pray the Rosary at the Vigil, in the Funeral Parlour, or within the home.

By keeping the Mass uncluttered and fully centered on prayer, we honor both our faith and our loved one. We allow the Church’s ancient and beautiful rites to express their full meaning. Most importantly, we give the deceased the greatest spiritual gift possible: the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered for the repose of their soul.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and reverence for the sacredness of the funeral liturgy. May Christ, who conquered death, bring comfort, peace, and healing to all who mourn.

In Christ’s peace,

Fr. Giang

Parish Priest
