Message from Fr Mark

What comes first, parish or people?

The area we know today as Scoresby was first settled in the mid 1850’s, so nearly 170 years ago.  Our Parish was established in 1970, roughly 120 years after Scoresby.  So people make parishes and that’s exactly what we find when we read the Code of Canon (Church) Law.  It speaks of parishes being ‘a community of the faithful.’   It doesn’t mention the church building!

I think two of the most important responsibilities that communities of faith then have is to evangelise and form people as disciples so that the Good News, the Gospel, grows within each and every one and is lived out each and every day.  Critical in this mission and unique to Australia is our system of Catholic education.  No other country has the system we have supported as it is very wonderfully by successive Governments in varying ways over many decades but especially since the Whitlam Government introduced; needs based funding in 1972.  From humble beginnings with the first Catholic school in Hunter St Parramatta which began 200 years ago there are now 1751 Catholic schools with 770,000 students and 98,000 staff.  They are wonderful places of evangelisation and formation and long may they flourish.
And associated with this is the parish responsibility, to prepare families as they bring their children forward for baptism.  Baptism is so much more than a ceremony or a ritual.  It’s the formal beginning of the journey of faith and is not ‘done’ to us but ‘lived’ by us.  But what does that mean for families in 2021?  That is why we need a few families who are regularly part of our Sunday community to help prepare families to have their children baptised.  WOULD YOU HELP, PLEASE?

I’d love to have 3 or 4 families who would be prepared to host a preparation session 3 or 4 times a year.  I’d train you up a bit and the session that you would lead would only last an hour.  Why not think about it and email me.

Thanks and stay well.

Mark

A catch up with Sr Mary Brady

In chatting with Sr Mary recently, she made mention that due to COVID and some health issues she has been unable to catch up with people of St Jude’s.  Therefore, on Wednesday 24th March we have invited her to a special morning tea in the Parish Centre (10.30am-12 noon).  This will give us the opportunity to thank her for all her work here in the parish as Pastoral Coordinator, but more importantly for the care, support and friendship she gave to so many parishioners.  All are very welcome and we hope that many of you can join us for this celebration.

For catering purposes and to adhere to COVID Guidelines, those wishing to attend must RSVP by Wednesday 17th March by email to pastoral.stjudes@gmail.com or by phoning Ann Doyle (0402 904 678), Mary King (0438 644 425) or the Parish Office (9763 7302) - please also indicate any dietary requirements.

Mass at St Jude’s in 2021

Breaking News

Today (Wednesday, 17th February), the Victorian Premier announced an easing of restrictions, returning back to COVIDSafe Summer conditions.

This allows us to resume our liturgical services, including weekday and weekend Masses.

An online Ash Wednesday Mass recording is available in the link below or on the St. Jude's YouTube channel.

Lent

Lent offers an invitation to actively reorientate ourselves to God, because for Christians, God—and the one who was so loved, Jesus—is the heart and the soul of life.

During this time of Lent, we are able to think more deeply about God and about how we are responding to God’s call in our daily lives.

We are offered this gracious time, when we can reflect on what has formed us in the last 12 months.
While some Masses were cancelled due to the Circuit Breaker lock down, a recording of the Ash Wednesday Mass is available on-line via the parish website or the St Jude's YouTube channel.

We will also have Stations of the Cross every Friday evening at 7.30pm, starting from Friday 19 FebruaryAssistance with coordination would be greatly appreciated please see Fr Mark.

As we approach Lent and Easter, our Liturgies are required to be adapted to ensure personal safety of all, as we remain vigilant against COVID.

Important – Registering for Masses

A reminder that the parish must still meet the government’s contact tracing requirements for religious gathering and registration is required for each Mass attended.  You can assist us greatly by pre-registering for the weekend Mass you wish to attend using one of the methods below:

·         Directly at trybooking (https://www.trybooking.com/BNTBP or the link on the Parish website) – this is the preferred method, or

·         Emailing your booking request to massrequest.stjudes@gmail.com, or

·         Calling the Parish Office (9763 7302) between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Tuesday through to Friday.  Let Elisa or Preethi know if you want to be pre-registered every week.

Projectionists – Assistance Required

As our regular liturgies resume after the isolation of COVID, we are in need of volunteers to run the projectors during our weekend Masses, especially on Saturday evening and Sunday 8:30 am Masses.  We would like to have enough volunteers, so that each person can be rostered just once a month.  It is not a difficult task and training will be provided.

Due to the Circuit Breaker lock down, this weekend's training session has bene re-scheduled to next Saturday, 27 February at 10:00 am.  The training should not take more than an hour.

If you wish to help or would like more information, please speak to Bill Ta, Leon Raj, Xavier David or send an email to liturgy.stjudes@gmail.com.  Finally, we would like to acknowledge and thank our current projectionists and hope that you can continue to assist us.
