Bushfire Recovery - St Vincent de Paul Society and a most generous donation from the Jewish Community

The St Vincent de Paul Society thanks all those from the Primary School and Parish who have generously contributed aid for those terribly affected by Victorian Fires and Drought.   This support has been most generously further supported by a large donation from the Victorian Jewish Community as described below.   If you are aware of anyone in need please direct them to the number in the press release.

Victorian Jewish community and St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria announce
$1 million to get bushfire-affected children ‘back to school’

Victoria’s Jewish community has today announced an extremely generous donation of $1million that will be used to rebuild communities affected by bushfires with the specific focus of enabling all children and higher education students to get resettled back into their schools and resume their education as quickly as possible.

A range of financial support is available, but this fund is especially for children and people undertaking all levels of education – from kindergarten through primary school, secondary, TAFE and university.

The financial support is available for all types of practical assistance – for example, school fees, transport, communication, uniforms and more.

Anyone affected by the bushfires who is seeking financial support should contact the St Vincent de Paul Society phone line on 13 18 12.

We invite you to please help us spread this important information to those fire-affected Victorians who St Vincent de Paul knows – from our work on the ground – are only now returning to their communities and beginning to assess their needs.

“Following the bushfires Vinnies will be there supporting as many Victorians as possible with long-term community rebuilding, and this specific project of helping those return to education is very special. The generosity of the Victorian Jewish community is a great partner for St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria to work with. We are thankful for their donation and want to help deliver the assistance where it is most needed. Education has always been a pillar of the Society’s work in Victoria and we understand how important it is to get young people back into education as quickly as possible.”

– Sue Cattermole, CEO, St Vincent de Paul Society – Victoria.

“We are very impressed by the practical and professional approach taken by St Vincent de Paul Society – Victoria and reassured that every dollar donated will be spent assisting the victims. Further, the fact that there are no overheads, no fees and with a very strong verification process and procedure made Vinnies the ideal partner for the Victorian Jewish community. We recognise that education is one of the most important things that builds communities. We want to ensure we help those affected by addressing the basics such as school fees and equipment, but also the important aspects of access, isolation, participation, health and extra demands.”

– David Smorgon OAM, on behalf of the Victorian Jewish Bushfire Relief Appeal.
